Grocery Bag Holder-Plastic Bag Holder

grocery bag holder I have made this tutorial to help you make a grocery bag holder to organize and dispense those plastic bags you get at the store. The best thing about this is that you can match your kitchen decor and they look great.

Organize your plastic grocery bags easily and dispense them when you need them. I use to have plastic bags stuffed all over until I made this holder

I made a bunch of these for christmas gifts and the people loved them. They make great gifts. You may have to explaine to them what they are! I know I did and then they got real excited because it is such a good idea.

Supplies For This Plastic Bag Holder

5 different fabric colors (fat quarters work great)
Ribbon for holder
1/4" Elastic, cut one piece 11 1/2" long and the other one 7" long.
I used 4 different bright colors plus yellow for the background.

Cut 4 - 5 1/2" squares for the four different colors you have choosen.
Cut 64 - 2 1/2" squares for the background. Mine is yellow.
cut 2 - 2 1/2" X 20 1/2" background color strips for the top and bottom.

Take your 2 1/2" squares and draw a line diagonal from corner to corner.

sewing squares

Once you have all of the squares marked lay one square on the corner of one of your 5 1/2" squares and sew on the line you have marked. You will need to sew one on each corner of the 5 1/2" square. These are called "snowballs"

Cut the corners off each square as pictured.

You can either sew the same color blocks in a row or you can mix them up. You could also use up your scraps and make each block a different color.

grocery bag top

Fold 1/4" inch over on the top and bottom strip and press. Fold over and bring down to the seam line and sew it there.

Sew the strap on. I used ribbon on mine but you can make your own out of some of your material. You can now insert the elastic into sleeve that you just made. I use a safety pin. Just hook it to one end of the elastic and feed it through. When the end gets to the edge of the sleeve tack in place and then finish threading the elastic through to the other end and tack it in place. Once you have your elastic inserted you can now sew up the side and your grocery bag holder is now done.
